06:30 PM Online Workshop – Unswaddling Pedagogy: How to Be with Young Children in Ways that Acknowledge Their Strengths and Celebrate Their Differences
Online Workshop – Unswaddling Pedagogy: How to Be with Young Children in Ways that Acknowledge Their Strengths and Celebrate Their Differences
Description: In very practical, joyful, playful ways, this workshop will engage with the concepts and practices of swaddling, unswaddling and non-swaddling pedagogies, bringing into the attention of the audience the pivotal role of early education in the designs of life. The presentation will also focus on the “missing beginnings”- the reasons why there is a globally present disconnect between early education and school education. Dr. Annabella Cant will share findings from her research in order to motivate the audience to think with the concepts and better understand the privilege of working with young children. She will continue the conversation on the introduced concepts and will share two examples of swaddling pedagogies: the “Moulding” one and the “Not-yet” one. Also, she will introduce the theory and practice of Imaginative Education – a pedagogy that she considers close to being unswaddling – together with her own contributions to it, contributions that emphasize the period at the beginning of life: 0 to 5. Participants will get a glimpse of children’s genuine capacity for openness and wonder by feeling it themselves. Annabella will remind her participants how to be joyful, playful, and open, and why these states of mind provoke deep and long-lasting learning in children. Presenter: Dr. Annabella Cant

Tinkering and STEM – What Does This Mean in Early Learning Programs? - In-Person Workshop
Description: The concept of tinkering is gaining momentum as a driver of creativity and innovation. The tinkering process is about creating ideas and making them through trial and error. Tinkering aligns with how children engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts and practices. When children engage in tinkering, they are blending tools of science with aesthetics and self-expression. This session will explore how children construct knowledge and express creativity in their play environments. Ideas for promoting tinkering and stem concepts in an array of curriculum areas will be presented. SUITABLE FOR ALL EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE PROFESSIONALS Presenter: Dr. Beverlie Dietze

As child care providers we are often the parents first line of information about child development, behaviours, and community resources. As well, we are sometimes a sounding board for the stresses they feel in their lives. In this workshop, we will look at who are the parents of the children we care for, how we get to know them and the power of good old-fashioned conversation. By understanding of culture, we will be better able to work with each child and their family. We will also look at how to maintain your professionalism from the time you have first contact on the telephone to the final day of attendance of the child at your centre. Presenter: Vicki Lepper Suitable for all early learning and child care professionals.
