Understanding & Accessing School Age Child Care

Different types of school age child care are available in BC:

Child Care Option

Description

Group Child Care Programs For school age children (including Kindergarten)

  • May have up to 30 children with one caregiver for every 15 children
  • Runs year round, before and after school hours and full days on pro-d / non-instructional days, school breaks and summer holidays
  • Group school age child care programs drop off and pick children up from school, but usually just schools in their neighbourhood.
In providers home child care There are 3 types of year round, child care for school age children offered in a caregivers’ home:

  • Family Child Care – may have up to 7 children between infancy and 12 years of age, with one family child care provider.
  • Multi-Age Child Care – may have up to 8 children between infancy and 12 years of age, with one early childhood educator.
  • License-Not-Required Child Care – may have up to 2 children between infancy and 12 years old who are not related to the caregiver, with one caregiver.

As with group care, these types of care drop-off and pick up children from schools in their neighbourhood and usually offer full days of care on pro-d days and during school breaks / summer.
